This is the original Beta version of the UK road mapping program 'Autoroute', release date ca 1988. I have had this on floppy for years now, and it's the original version now sold by Microsoft as a massively overblown application filling a CD!

The remarkable feat of compressing the roadmap structures for the UK into less than 1Mb is to be commended, though in this version a few defects stil exist (Slough for example, is completely missing - believe me, this is probably a forgivable omission having been there briefly!)

To install the program :

1/ Unzip to a directory eg C:\Route

2/ Run the file 'Config' which will suggest a graphics mode and mouse configuration (eg microsoft, bus or serial mouse). Correct these to the closest settings to your system. Note that due to the age of the program, only 16 colours are used in *any* video mode.

3/ You can now start autoroute typing 'Route' in the program directory.
(or 'Start' for windows 95)

Usage:

1/ Use the left/right cursor keys to select a menu item, to get a map you must first enter a route under 'Journey'. Press 'Esc' when done.

2/ Go to 'Calculate' and marvel at the speed of route calculation - on a 386/25, this *outperforms* the present version on a P200/32Mb/16x CD by around 50% ! Press 'Esc' again to return to the menus.

3/ Finally, choose either Table, or Map and use the function keys indicated on screen to navigate around. Enjoy!

***Windows 95 : This program will run sucessfully in a window for data entry, but will switch to full screen graphics automatically for map display.***
